You've met the one - now what?

Engagement Ring Buying Guide

Now this is the part we love.

It’s natural to be a little nervous giving jewelry.

But you should never be nervous buying an engagement ring.

So we made a guide that’s simple, honest, and actually helpful.

The goal: confident, never confused. Excited, not spiraling.

It can feel intimidating. It doesn’t have to.

Options & Experts

There are a lot of ring types, diamond types, and style options... enough to make a person's head spin.

A reputable boutique jeweler invests in education because this is a lifetime purchase for your family. Our diamond experts take time to understand you, your budget, and the person you’re buying for, then walk you through options in plain language.

Tip 1: Find a jeweler who listens

Not just someone selling lab-grown or natural diamonds, or chasing the flashiest stone in the case.

You deserve a jeweler who takes time to understand your story, your style, and your budget. Then they show you options that fit your story.

Tip 2: Choose a jeweler with a trusted diamond buyer

Our experts inspect every diamond with our eyes and years of expertise.

Reports and numbers matter, but they don’t replace seeing the real stone. We hand-select every loose diamond we carry.

We don’t think twice about saying “no” to 99 out of every 100 diamonds. You deserve better than “good enough.”

And the ones we reject? They still get sold. You can usually find them overpriced at chain stores and on big national websites.

We never buy a diamond based on a grading report alone, and neither should you.

Natural & Labratory Grown Diamonds

There are two main categories of diamonds - Natural and Laboratory-Grown - which are distinguished by how they were formed.

Tip 3: Natural or Lab-Grown? Each has its charm.

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around. Here’s the clean version: it comes down to priorities.

  • Natural diamonds are rare, formed in the earth, and hold long-term value. Large natural center stones from Laskers are eligible for our trade-up program if you later decide to upgrade.

  • Lab-grown diamonds are optically and chemically identical to natural diamonds, but created in a lab. You’ll get more size and sparkle for your budget, but it is not eligible for upgrade or future returns.

We carry both because we love letting you see them side by side. There’s never pressure to buy. We give you space and time to wander and learn.

The right diamond is the one you love. The right choice is the one that fits your life

Consider Your Budget

There’s no magic formula—what matters is what works for you.

Pick a range that feels responsible for your life,

not what the internet says you’re “supposed” to spend.

Ask about flexible payment plans to make it all manageable.

Tip 4: Consider Your Budget

Maybe you’re planning to start small and upgrade later. Maybe you’re thinking “new vehicle money.” Either way, walk in with a range that feels responsible for your life.

And ask about payment plan options. A good plan takes this from “financial boulder” to “okay, we can do this.”

Style & Substance Matters

Even if you’ve been together for years, their dream ring might surprise you.

Also, the ring you love on a screen can look different on a hand. Every day we see people try something on and go, “Wait… I didn’t expect that to be my favorite.”

That’s not a problem. That’s the process working.

Tip 5: ask for help

You can pay attention to the jewelry they already wear. You can scroll rings together “just for fun.” Casual conversations reveal major clues.

You can ask a close friend or family member. You can even have your partner try on a few options so you can see what lights them up.

For best results, come in together. Try things on. Notice what makes their face change.

Tip 6: The Setting and Metal Type Matters

The setting isn’t just style. It’s security. It affects how your diamond wears over time. Ask about:

  • Ring integrity and security for daily wear
  • Metal types (platinum, 14k, 18k, yellow/white/rose gold)
  • Sizing flexibility of different metals and styles

Read our Guide to Ring Metals to understand how to choose a ring that keeps up with your life.

Timeline

Not everyone can plan ahead. We get it. We've got proposal ready options.

But when you can plan ahead, you unlock more options and more calm.

Also, planning ahead helps you avoid the “I need it by Friday” panic. Either way, we've got your back.

Tip 7: Plan Your Timeline

There are three timelines to get you to “pop the question” ready:

  • Proposal-ready: Buy today, walk out with the ring.
  • Semi-custom: Set a diamond into a new setting or metal; takes about 1–2 weeks.
  • Fully custom: Designed from scratch; allow at least 6 weeks.

Plan your timeline so this stays fun and memorable, not frantic and sweaty.

Costs for Sizing, Maintenance, Replacement

We never surprise you with hidden costs that show up later at chain stores or online.

We like clean expectations, and we like that you like clean expectations.

Tip 8: Understand All Costs

Protect Your Investment

What’s the difference between warranties, guarantees, and insurance?

Great question. It’s also where a lot of confusion lives.

Tip 9: Protect Your Investment

How many places can you name where your parents, grandparents, and maybe great-grandparents shopped?

We have customers who’ve been visiting us since they bought their engagement ring more than 50 years ago.

A reputable jeweler offers a warranty or guarantee on what they sell. Sometimes it’s free. Sometimes it’s paid. Laskers offers the Laskers Promise, because we believe in the integrity of our products.

Insurance is different. It protects you from loss, damage, or theft, the things none of us can predict. We’ve partnered with Zillion to make that easy and affordable, and we can also provide paperwork if you prefer a different provider.

Trust Yourself & Have Fun

This should feel fun, not pressured.

Read reviews. Ask friends. Fact-check anything that doesn’t sit right.

But above all, trust your instincts. A good jeweler, like a good friend, listens without pushing.

Just because it takes pressure to make diamonds doesn’t mean you should ever feel pressure in our store.

okay, friend. Consider yourself guided.
